The Hiram M. Chittenden locks (also called the Ballard Locks) aren't just a pair of locks connecting Lake Union to the Sound - but it is a large park with a cool indoor salmon ladder viewing area, a museum, picnic grounds, and manicured gardens. Tours start at the Visitor Center and last about an hour. Feel free to join the tour anytime (even if you see it walking around without you), and no registration is required.
