For 144 years, Memorial Day has been faithfully observed in Seattle. The tradition began in Seattle in 1879 with Union veterans of the Civil War and continues to this day. Our Memorial Day weekend tours will explore the history of early Memorial Day in Seattle and the veterans of the Civil War who established it in the city. You’ll hear about the history of one of Seattle's historic treasures, the G.A.R. cemetery park, thousands of Civil War veterans who made Seattle and King County home and how they observed Memorial Day for many decades on our city. We’ll stand in the footsteps of these Civil War veterans where they themselves observed Memorial Day for their departed comrades and hear it in their own words. Tours are scheduled Saturday, Sunday & Monday of the holiday weekend at various times to allow opportunity for anyone to attend in a way that fits people's schedules. Sunday evening will be a special twilight version. To see available times and to reserve a spot, please visit:
